Workbenches for NZ Workshops

A workbench that flexes under load, runs short on space, or takes weeks to arrive at your workshop isn’t solving a problem. Kiwi Choice supplies heavy-duty workbenches, custom-built for busy New Zealand workshops. They’re sized to your space, built quickly, and installed by our professional team. If your workshop needs a proper bench, let’s get it sorted.

Heavy-Duty Workbenches Built for Your Workshop, Whatever You're Working On

A heavy-duty workbench needs to suit the work being done on it. Here's how we spec our workbenches for different trade and commercial environments.

Trade Workshop

For general trades (like carpentry, electrical, plumbing) you need a solid, stable surface that handles tools, parts, and the occasional impact. We typically recommend a commercial workbench with a steel top rated to 500kg, with under-bench shelving for consumables and a pegboard above for hand tools.  Pair it with garage shelving to keep the rest of your workshop organised.

Mechanic & Auto Workshop

Engine components, gearboxes, and axle assemblies are heavy. Auto workshop benches are rated to 1,000kg static load, with a thick steel top that shrugs off oil, grease, and dropped tools.  Castors are popular here. Moving the bench to the car rather than the other way around saves time.

Fabrication & Welding

Welding bays need a surface that won't buckle under heat or catch sparks. A bare steel top is the right call, paired with a heavy frame and adjustable height so you're working at the right position, not hunching over a bench set at the wrong level.  Our NZ commercial workbench range includes configurations purpose-built for fabrication.

Commercial & Industrial Use

For production lines, packing stations, or quality control benches, laminate tops are a popular choice – durable, easy to clean, and kind to products being processed. Warehouse shelving and industrial shelving pair well with these setups to keep your workflow running smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on what you’re working with. Light assembly, electronics, or packaging has very different demands of fabrication work, engine components, or heavy tooling.

Most heavy-duty solutions in commercial and industrial settings are rated to handle several hundred kilograms—some up to 1,000kg static load, depending on the frame and benchtop configuration.

Many of our workbench configurations include under-bench shelving, above-bench shelving, or both. If you need storage for tools, parts, or consumables alongside your work surface, flag it during the design stage, and we’ll build it in.

We supply our commercial workbenches New Zealand-wide. Whether you’re based in Auckland or down in Christchurch, get in touch with your requirements, and we’ll handle the rest, wherever your workshop is located.

Start with your available floor space and how much of it you want the bench to take up. Then think about your workflow: do you need a long run of bench to spread materials out, or a deeper surface to handle bulkier items? A workbench that’s too narrow forces you to constantly shuffle things around, one that’s too long eats into aisle space or access points you actually need.

Tell us your use case, and we’ll spec the right dimensions—length, depth, and height—so your commercial workbench works with your space rather than against it.

For most trades, yes, especially if multiple people are using the same bench, or if you’re spending long hours at it. Fixed-height benches are usually set at a standard 900mm, which suits most standing tasks. But if you’re doing detailed work that requires you to be closer to the surface, or if ergonomics matter for your team, adjustable-height legs let you dial in the right working height. It’s a relatively small upgrade that makes a real difference over the course of a day.

It depends on what you’re doing:

  • Steel — best for heavy fabrication, welding, and auto work. Tough, heat-resistant, and handles impact well.
  • Stainless steel — ideal for food prep, medical, or any environment that needs to be kept clean and hygienic.
  • Laminate — a good all-rounder for assembly, packing, and light trade use. Easy to clean and gentler on products.
  • MDF — suited to light-duty work where you need a smooth, flat surface. Less durable than steel or laminate under heavy use.

Not sure which suits your setup? We’re happy to talk it through.

Yes — all three are common add-ons we can build in or accommodate. Vices can be mounted directly to the bench frame; let us know during the design stage so we can ensure the structure supports it properly. Pegboard panels are a popular above-bench addition for keeping hand tools accessible. Lighting mounts can also be integrated if you’re working in a space where overhead lighting isn’t ideal. Just flag what you need when you get in touch.
